Text Box: QM Committees in Place
In a measure to improve quality within Quality Matters and continue the QM model of development through collaboration, we have established committees to oversee all functional areas in the QM program. We are taking a team approach, using our community of practitioners, to further hone our policies and practices. For most of these committees, we are using a co-chair model in which we pair external experts with QM staff members who manage each function. Following is an overview of each committee:
Quality Matters Rubric Committee: the members of this committee are charged to recommend changes to the current 2006-2007 version of the QM Rubric for implementation in the 2008 version of the QM Rubric, scheduled for release in early 2008. Distinguished members of this committee include:
Jurgen Hilke, Frederick CC, co-chair
Ron Legon, University of Baltimore & Executive Diriector of Quality Matters, co-	chair
Mary Wells, Prince George’s Community College (Ret.)
Chris Sax, Shippensburg University
Jean Runyon, Anne Arundel CC
Kay Shattuck, Carroll CC
Larry Ragan, Penn State World Campus
Rick Aman, Portland CC
Ed Bowen, Dallas Telecollege

Training Review Committee: this committee serves to review the QM training offerings and to implement suggestions for improvement. Teri Kepner, QM Training Manager, and Mary Wells, Prince George’s Community College (Ret), serve as co-chairs.
Course Review Committee: currently in the development stage, this committee will evaluate the QM Course Review process and provide feedback and suggestions for improvement. Chandra Robinson, QM Course Review Manager, and Cassie Carter, Texas Tech University, serve as co-chairs.

Policy And Standards Refresher

As a reminder to all our trainers and new subscribers, we are re-enforcing QM policies and standards to ensure we are meeting our own standards of quality.  The following is a list of criteria for QM roles:

Peer Reviewers

Peer Training in Online Teaching:  You should have formal training within the institution or other formal training.

Online Teaching Experience: You should have taught online for more than two semesters and have taught within the last eighteen months. Instructional Designers will be approved on an individual basis.

Current QM Peer Review Training: You should have received official QM Peer Review Training (F2F or online) between July ‘06 and the present.

Master Reviewer

You must have already completed a minimum of two Quality Matters Peer Reviews before you are eligible for this training.

Course Review Chair

To serve as a Course Review Chair, you must be a QM Master Reviewer.

Independent Course Review Manager (to run Independent QM Course Reviews)

You must have course review experience (minimum of two reviews) and have successfully completed Institution Representative Training.

A Matter of Course Reviews

Q: How do I get selected to serve on a Quality Matters Course Review?

A:     Ask to be placed on the review team for one of your own institution’s courses.

A:     Become a Quality Matters Master Reviewer

QM is pleased to have an expansive pool of Quality Matters trained Peer Reviewers but is in need of Master Reviewers to chair course reviews.   As a means to ensure the continuing high standards of a QM course review, the chair of every QM-managed review team will be a Master Reviewer.  Your best opportunity to sit on a course review is to obtain additional Quality Matters training to become a Master Reviewer.  As a prerequisite, you must have the experience of a minimum of two QM course reviews.

The quickest route to gain peer reviewer experience is to have your institution submit courses for a QM course review and to request you as one of the reviewers.  As long as Quality Matters is able to meet the other requirements for the composition of the review team (i.e. a subject matter expert, a Master Reviewer, and a reviewer external to the institution), the request will be accommodated.  This will enable you to obtain the training you need while also helping to set the benchmark for quality within your distance learning program.

Please contact Teri Kepner at tkepner@qualitymatters.org  for information on QM training programs. For information on Course Reviews, please contact Chandra Robinson at crobinson@qualitymatters.org.
