Content and Structure of Educational Documents
This workshop provides an in-depth, practical experience for educators seeking to make their course materials more accessible and inclusive for all learners in K–12 and higher education. This hands-on session focuses on ensuring that documents are clearly organized, easy to navigate and compatible with assistive technologies like screen readers.
Participants will learn to apply semantic structure — using headings, paragraphs, lists, and tables — to create documents and LMS content that are not only visually clear but also functionally accessible. The workshop guides educators through best practices for designing materials that support diverse reading levels, including writing in plain language and using inclusive techniques that address the needs of multilingual and neurodiverse learners.
Special attention is given to the process of improving structural accessibility by evaluating and revising links, language settings and navigation elements within documents and learning platforms. Participants will use both manual methods and free tools like Microsoft Accessibility Checker and Grackle to audit and remediate their own documents for accessibility barriers that may not be immediately visible. A unique feature of this workshop is the integration of AI-assisted tools that help participants refine readability, enhance document hierarchy and streamline navigation. Educators will get hands-on experience using AI to rewrite complex text for various reading levels and to identify structural issues that may impede student access.
This workshop balances current accessibility guidelines with real-world teaching scenarios, providing practical strategies, resources and checklists educators can apply immediately — without needing specialized or paid software. Participants will leave prepared to remove structural barriers from their educational documents, ensuring a more equitable and effective learning experience for every student.
