FAQs for 2019 QM Connect Conference Presentation Proposals

1. What are the session format options?

There are several format options:

  • Conversation that Matters
  • Active Learning
  • Panel
  • Quality Talk  
  • Poster
  • Group Session (Engagement Strategies concentrations)

2. What is a “Conversation that Matters” session?

A 50-minute session in which the content leader presents an idea to participants for 10-15 minutes, followed by discussion among all participants. The content leader becomes a facilitator, volleying comments and questions around the room and facilitating discussion. A Conversation that Matters may be led by an individual or group of individuals from the same institution, or a group of individuals from multiple institutions.

3. What is an “Active Learning” session?

A 50-minute session that engages participants in the learning process by creating a dynamic, interactive learning experience through the use of small groups, pair and share, or individual hands-on activities. Active learning sessions may be presented by an individual or group of individuals from the same institution, or a group of individuals from multiple institutions.

4. What is a “Panel” session?

A 50-minute session consisting of three to five panelists discussing a specific topic or challenge in a conversational format that is moderated by a session chair. Panel sessions offer participants diversity of thought, opinion, and perspective. A panel may consist of individuals from a single institution or individuals from multiple institutions. Panelists are typically grouped by role, discipline or area of expertise.

5. What is a “Quality Talk” session?

A 25 minute lecture style presentation on a topic related to quality assurance, ending with designated time for Q&A. A Quality Talk may be presented by an individual or group of individuals from the same institution, or a group of individuals from multiple institutions. We encourage collaboration with multiple institutions. The presentation should be dynamic in nature and engage participants through the use of high-quality graphics or story-telling.

6. What is the “Poster” format?

A presentation that combines the graphic display of topics in a poster format with the opportunity for individualized, informal discussion of the work presented. Presenters set up their posters in a large exhibit area with other presenters. Posters are typically presented by an individual or small group of individuals and often include handouts for participants.

Posters are appropriate for information that can be conveyed in tables or process steps. Posters are actual, physical posters that are displayed at lunch on Monday. We don’t use digital posters because of their limited visibility. Poster guidelines will be sent to those that are accepted. You may use a computer for backup and you may have handouts. The poster session follows lunch Monday and presenters are asked to be with their posters and talk to conference participants about the information in the poster during that time. Posters remain on display for the remainder of the conference. There is a poster contest and the poster that is judged to be the best will receive an award at Tuesday’s Award Luncheon.

7. What is a “Group Session”?

This format will be used for the Engagement Strategies concentrations.  We will group two proposals with similar topics to form a 50-minute session. Each presenter (or group of presenters) will have 15- to 20-minutes to summarize an idea and then answer moderator’s and audience questions during a 20-minute Q & A session at the end. These sessions foster lively discussions and linkages as we strive for panels with complementary topics.

8. What happened to the K-12 concentration?

We definitely want K-12 focused proposals! With the change in the conference name to QM Connect, we want K-12 to be integrated into the conference, so we do not have a separate concentration for K-12 this year. Find topic suggestions for K-12 in each concentration. Indicate K-12 in the Intended Audience by Role question.

9. Is there anything more I need to know if my proposal is about formal research?

Yes, there are five extra questions to be answered for Measuring the Impact of Quality proposals that are about formal research.

State the research question(s) the study addresses.

  1. Briefly describe the theoretical framework of the study.
  2. Briefly describe the research methodology used in the study.
  3. Briefly describe the potential for replication of the study.
  4. Briefly summarize how the research is relevant to quality assurance or QM literature and/or practice.

10. Can you explain the "intended audience" questions?

There are two "intended audience" questions.

  • The first question asks about your intended audience in relation to their role. You may select all that apply. We added QM Reviewers and Master Reviewers, QM Coordinators, and K-12 to the options.
  • The second question asks about your intended audience in relation to their knowledge or experience level. You may select only one.
    • New to the topic 
    • Some experience in the topic, but looking to grow  
    • Experienced in the topic, but who are transitioning to greater responsibility in this area 
    • Extensive experience in the topic, looking for ways to find out what is new or to deepen their knowledge

11. What if I want to make changes to my proposal after I submit?

The confirmation email you receive after your initial submission contains the url and information you need to get back into your proposal to make changes. Changes will not be allowed during the Program Committee’s review.

12. How will proposals be evaluated?

The Program Committee will use a weighted rubric made up of the following questions (not in order of weight):

  • Relevance to QA - To what degree is the proposal directly related to quality assurance in online education?
  • Fit to Concentration - How well does the proposal fit the selected concentration?
  • Proposal Content - To what degree does the proposal reflect familiarity with the field (does not "reinvent the wheel") and frame the presentation of the topic to suit the level of the designated audience?
  • Learning Objectives - Are the learning objectives aligned to the presentation's content? Are they written from the participant's point of view and are they measurable?
  • Participation - Are the plans for participant engagement appropriate and sufficient to ensure an interactive session?
  • Effectiveness of Title - How well does the title match the session content and how much appeal does the proposal title have?
  • Effectiveness of Writing - How well written is the brief description? Is it clear what will be discussed?
