See Stars: Making Astronomy Classes Accessible to Visually Impaired Students

Physics instructor has worked for a full year with Distance Education's Accessibility team, to make his NASA grant funded, online Astronomy courses (PHY 121, 122 and 123) accessible to students with disabilities. His biggest challenge was how to make his courses accessible to visually impaired students.

We have worked with the library to order books and tactile graphics; we have printed tactile graphics from NASA; we have looked into sonification, and added audio description to video.

QM's New Teaching Online Certificate

Quality Matters is beginning to address other aspects of the quality online learning experience. The new Teaching Online Certificate from Quality Matters is built on validated online instructor competencies and includes a series of seven workshops. Instructors who complete the workshops will build a portfolio of evidence of their online teaching competence, culminating with the award of the Online Teaching Certificate upon completion of all seven workshops. Each workshop completion is recognized with a digital credential that is connected to evidence of competence.

Introducing the QM Rubrics and Gaining Faculty Buy-in: Using Non-Threatning Approaches to Using the QM Rubrics

As a new subscriber to Quality Matters, we were interested in helping faculty and instructors who teach online use the QM rubrics in course development and revision in nonthreatening
ways. Pilots occurred in the Graduate Program in Nursing, Graduate Program in Education, and in a selection of online summer offerings in the Undergraduate program. This presentation will demonstrate the many ways that institutions might introduce the QM rubrics to their faculty in supportive and non-threatening ways.

A Journey Through QM Course Design and Development: The Intertwined Stories of A Faculty and An Instructional Developer

This session will provide an overview of the Online Course Development Award process of implementing QM at the University of Northern Iowa. It will explore the partnership that occurs between faculty and instructional developer (ID) as a foundation of the thinking about and application of the design and functionality of the course content following the QM Rubric. The presenters will also discuss the ongoing transformation of the developer and faculty roles to develop and deliver effective online instruction.
